Behind the Brew
First brewed in 1984, Schell’s Hefeweizen is made with a blend of wheat malt and barley malts. We use an authentic wheat beer yeast culture, which gives the beer a fruity ale character dominated by a citrus-like tartness. Refreshingly light character with a higher than normal carbonation level. Straw-colored and cloudy from the unfiltered yeast left in suspension. Notes of banana and clove with a slight bready malt flavor. It has won many awards throughout the years and has become a staple in our seasonal lineup. A traditional Hefeweizen is commonly known as the breakfast beer of Southern Germany. In Bavaria it completes the trio of Weisswurst and a pretzel. The Weisswurst, or white sausage, is made of veal and seasoned with parsley. It has a delicate flavor and is traditionally served with sweet mustard. For the full experience, drink a Hefeweizen, eat a Weisswurst, and do it in your Dirndl or Lederhosen.

It has a delicate flavor and is traditionally served with sweet mustard. For less traditional pairings, Hefeweizen is a very versatile beer. Its light and delicate flavor pairs well with other lighter foods such as lemon risotto, raspberry shortcake, and banana pudding. Other good pairings include fish and shellfish, specifically those prepared with citrus to bring out the delicate fruity flavors of the Hefeweizen, and salads (including fruit salads). For cheeses, try tangy kinds like brick, edam, goat, and feta.
